The development of the BDP weed rake.

Myself  (Dr Bleep) and a few friends were fishing a new, little fished water last year for a few unknown lumps. This water was heavily weeded making the fishing difficult, if not impossible in some swims.

Many swims were virtually unfishable due to this blanket of thick weed.

The coots could even walk across it without getting their feet wet!

We needed a decent rake to clear the weed and stir up the bottom.

Simple you may think?

Not so. 

Such a 'specialist' angling tool seemed impossible to buy.

The old anglers 'standby' of two garden rakes bolted together back to back was crude and the finished tool cumbersome and heavy to carry.

This monstrosity did not do the job properly at all. Distance was a real problem and you couldn't pull it in easily either loaded with weed.

In a word....Useless!

We needed  a rake which was compact and fitted easily in a tackle bag. 

It needed to be robust and also heavy enough to be slung by hand a fair distance and bring in a payload of weed that was managable. 

Luckily we had Dave of 'BDP Developments' in our ranks who is a master at inventing (and re-inventing) all sorts of fishing tackle, in his words "not made quite right" in the first place!

Therefore, after some work ,the early prototypes were produced in his engineering factory and tested thoroughly at the lake.

The "Drag  "N" Rake" was finally born and produced locally by Dave...originally for our small local band of carp anglers to overcome the horrendous weed problem on this particular lake.

It has since taken the angling fraternity by storm and he can just about make enough to keep up with demand!

I always have stock though as Dave lives a mere ten minutes from me.

FOR THE LAST YEAR WE HAVE BEEN TESTING THIS PRODUCT AND FOUND IT TO BE INVALUABLE FOR ALL THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FISHING ENCOUNTERED ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT WATERS.

It is unique.  Just 7" in length with 8x 3"  DOUBLE SIDED PRONGS.

It weighs just over 1/2 kg.

Why A PRECISE 7" in length ?

  Quite simply after a few prorotypes and testing, this size turned out to be the ULTIMATE design of them all.

Any bigger and the throwing distance was compromised... also it became a chore and required the arms of  "Arnie " to bring in the weed.

At 7" it will also fit comfortably in the hopper of most bait boats.

IT HAS DOUBLE SIDED PRONGS ANGLED PRECISELY SO THAT IT WILL "TURN OVER" AND RELEASE IF IT HITS A SNAG.

  IT WILL RAKE  THE BOTTOM AND CLEAR WEED AT THE SAME TIME.

Everything, including the cord diameter, size and weight has been carefully thought out and tested BY ANGLERS over the last year.

IT WORKS SO WELL THAT OTHER ANGLERS SEEING IT IN USE WERE OFFERING CASH FOR OUR EARLY PROTOTYPES ON THE BANK!

IT HAS NOW RELEASED FOR SALE TO ALL ANGLERS .

THE RAKE IS SUPPLIED WITH 20 METRES 60 ft (approx) OF 250KG (550LBS) 3MM DIA  CORD.

THIS THING FLYS!.

The cord has an adjustable wriststrap (or bivvy peg stay) so you don't throw it out and then lose it... Yes it can happen! 

 EXTRA WEIGHT can be added to the rake head (if needed) by simply  removing one of the plastic bungs from the head tube .

Simply fill the tube with whatever comes to hand in an angling scenario...lead carp weights, split shot, nuts and bolts or even sand.

Don't worry, when you have finished raking simply empty the tube of your precious leads etc!

BUT THE BEST THING IS ...Once you have your nice clean swim you simply detach the cord fitting (seconds) from the rake head. This is a simple angling standard 3/8" thread fitting. 

Then attach the RAKE head to your landing net pole to bring the close in weed to your feet!

With waders and a light extending match type landing net pole (available soon for this rake from CarpSmart Products) you can even rake further out with no need to chuck out in some situations.

Some of the "anglers rakes" I have seen demand fixing numerous poles together and involve having to carry or buy extra tackle to achieve the task in hand or the distance you may need!

These items are usually extras to carry, add weight and a hassle for the  angler who likes to be mobile.One rake on the market is only 2" long though, but reccommends using BRAIDED high BS line and a very high test curve rod to use it! It seems to take forever to clear a swim of weed that way... with a lot of effort reeling it in too!

It is so light and compact it can be kept in the tackle bag until needed.

An added bonus with the BDP rake is that due to the size and weight of the rake head  and cord it can easily be taken out in the hopper of most makes of bait boat for extra distance, then pulled back by hand.
